Drown proofing
Tomorrow is Fuller’s last swim lesson of this session. I know this was a shotgun swim lesson session, because it was only for a few weeks and really Fuller isn’t ready to enter the water without some sort of flotation assistance.
Yesterday I bought Fuller a Power Swimr at Target. It is similar to the “bubbles” they strap on the kids for their lessons, but this help is in front and back, helping the kids balance. You remove the foam pads as the child’s skills develop.
With this sort of assistance, Fuller can maneuver in the water comfortably (with Mommy or Daddy close by) and we can continue the work his teacher, Miss Kathy, has started. Fuller still isn’t comfortable jumping in the pool and he isn’t consistently comfortable with putting his face in the water. Yesterday he was almost floating on his back and not fighting it, which is progress.
Fuller has really enjoyed his lessons, but he sees more of the fun part and not really the lesson part. He is excited to go and enjoys kicking and being pulled around by his teacher, but there is still lots to work to be done.
There is a saying that the beginning stages of swim lessons are really just drown proofing your child, and I know unless we work on these skills with Fuller, he isn’t drown proof yet. And since The Lake’s water level has restored to normal (according to my in-laws), I know being in the water will be a number one priority for our upcoming trip. So, we continue with drown proofing and having fun at the same time.
