You had me at “Batman”

Published by at 7:14 pm under Best. Dad. Ever.

As members of the Creative Discovery Museum we get the monthly newsletter with upcoming events. I have to admit I am often disappointed because it seems a lot of their (free) special events are geared toward kids who are older than Fuller by at least a year or two.

This month one event caught my eye and I asked Damon if he thought Fuller would be too young:

What do Batman, Men in Black and The Flash have in common? They are all comic book characters illustrator Rod Whigham has drawn for such comic book giants as Marvel and D.C. Comics. And now you can too. Learn how to draw your own comic character in this comic book workshop. Rod Whigham will lead a three-day workshop with three classes scheduled each day beginning Thursday, July 31 and ending Saturday, August 2. Each workshop will last 40-50 minutes. Twenty children per workshop and workshops will fill on a first come, first serve basis.

If anything, I thought Damon himself would be interested. A comic book illustrator? One who drew Batman and The Flash? A comic book illustrator?!?!

Well, Damon being Damon, and thinking only the awesomest things about Fuller and his son’s capabilities, decided he would go to the museum himself one afternoon, just to scope it out. And he figured he could then prepare Fuller, complete with some Fuller-sized materials, and take Fuller for a lesson in comic book illustrating.

It was something Damon looked forward to for weeks. Our friend Ed took four of his boys to one of the Thursday sessions and his report was the session was probably too old for Fuller. Undaunted, Damon went over to the museum and scoped it out for himself. Again, thinking only positive thoughts, he decided to go ahead and get Fuller prepped for the fun.

Rod Whigham explains guidelines

Rod Whigham was an excellent teacher. He definitely has his teaching method down and didn’t really bat an eyelash at the wide variety of ages in the room. Fuller was definitely the youngest and all the parents in the room (except me, the photographer) participated in drawing along with the instructions.

More tracing

Damon knew what was coming, so he set up a tracing system for Fuller to follow, and even brought special pencils for Fuller to use. Fuller enjoyed it, with all the help and attention from Daddy it was an excellent experience.

Signing his name

At the end of the lesson, all the students were told to sign their work, which Fuller did gleefully.

I think with the proper parental supervision and proper expectations, Fuller was a model student. And he definitely has a great memory to repeat to us over and over again in the coming week.
