Cake for breakfast
My family has a little tradition of eating leftover birthday cake for breakfast. It was a way of prolonging all the birthday fun and reliving the celebration of yesterday. I also like looking over the pictures and making collages of the day’s events.
When I wrote last night’s post my brain was a bit fuzzy after such a busy day. Hopefully you can see by the collage above (click on it to see the BIG version) just how busy we were. I suppose fuzzy brain was appropriate since I remember a lot of the fuzzy brain in the minutes, hours, and days following Fuller’s birth. Why shouldn’t his birthday be any different?
We had to wake Fuller up yesterday (which is not normal) and when he was reminded it was his birthday, he went from sleepyhead to alert in .3 seconds. Suddenly he was demanding. “Where is my present? Where is my birthday cake with the number four on it?”
Um…
See, we aren’t birthday party people yet. We decided to follow some friends’ lead and not stress out about birthday parties until Fuller started asking for them. And having a birthday on Sunday caused some stress because we had to be at church for turn at our nursery duty. I thought we would wait until coming home to open presents and commence with the birthday fun.
We did have a present for him- the shield to his Captain America costume. I’m sure Damon will blog more about that later, but I have to tell you, Fuller was over the moon to have it.
When he brought up the cake, I panicked a little. We had no cake. I knew I would do something, like cookies or ice cream, but the effort to make a cake… I was lacking in that department. So, we held him over by telling him after church we would go to the store to buy the ingredients to make a cake together.
True to my word Fuller picked out a cake mix (chocolate fudge), frosting (chocolate with sprinkles!) and a number four candle. Fuller was thrilled to help make his cake- cracking the eggs, dumping the water, pouring the mix, and unwrapping the butter. After the cake pans made it to the oven, he retired to his room for quiet time.
Our late afternoon was spent at the corn maze, a church organized event. Fuller had a blast running around, playing with friends, and getting plenty sweaty. Afterward, we came home and decorated the cake.
Fuller’s fingers kept finding their way “accidentally” into the icing. He loved putting the sprinkles on, making sure they made a nice mountain in one particular section of the cake. I spread them out and the rest of the evening was spent eating cake, doing a marathon of birthday phone calls (making great use out of Skype and our webcam), and opening some other presents from Cool Aunt Stina. More presents will come later this week, keeping with family tradition to spread out our birthdays for days.
For not being party people, we really spread out the celebration from the moment Fuller woke up until he went to bed. Next year, I have a feeling there will be some organized activity. But right now, I’m just going to enjoy my four year old.

Happy Birthday Fuller! It sounds like that was a great day all around. We’ve got a big day just 4 short ones from today. Then a week from Sunday we are having the big #1 party.
[...] was a quick trip, and overall ok. But Sunday was crazy busy with a certain four year old’s birthday. (I still can’t believe I’m a mother of a four year old.) Between nursery at church, [...]
