Reading List

Published by at 8:25 pm under Family education

Last week we were so focused on Halloween fun during storytime, we didn’t really get our usual five books. Instead we only came home with three books. And, I have to say, they were kind of boring.

Max’s Valentine (Max and Ruby) – I think the Max and Ruby books came before the television show on Nick, Jr. We have seen enough of TV show for me to know I don’t like Ruby. She is annoying. But in the book version, it’s hard to tell she is overbearing and selfish, never giving Max more than a few lines of dialogue. Also, it is easier to swallow in a book that the two “kids” have no parental oversight at all.

Anyway, Fuller picked out this book and it was fun to read with him since he is picking up more words in his reading. And since we don’t have Nickelodeon anymore, it gave him a glimpse into the world he may or may not think he is missing.

Hello Grand Mamoon! – I have no idea what I was thinking when I picked out this book. It touched on folklore of the past, discussing, briefly, various cultures and their relationship with the moon. Really, it was the story of a little girl trying to come to grips with the death of her grandmother. Fuller, didn’t really get that part, but he understood there might be a picture of a woman in the moon.

In the Night Kitchen (Caldecott Collection) – Maurice Sendak’s illustrations are some of my favorite. I had never seen this book before, and checked it out simply because it was Maurice Sendak. As for the story, it is about a little boy’s dream of being in a kitchen of strange bakers. After breaking free from the batter the bakers tried to put him in, the little boy showed the bakers how to get milk. Fuller thought it was fun.

We went to the library again today and picked up five more books to read this week. Fuller is really getting into reading, since he is picking up more words. I think it is a matter of time before he is reading to me.

we love Max & Ruby at our house. they are especially great with the age of my 2 boys because jeremiah can try to read them while nathaniel loves the pictures. the other books that are really good for that are the “spot” books. jeremiah is recently into Sendak’s “Kenny’s Window” – highly recommend that.
