February: the countdown begins

On the first of every month Fuller gets the opportunity to rearrange the numbers on his magnetic calendar. I enjoy it because he tests his number skills and we talk about things coming up.

Fuller is obviously getting smarter because he realized two days ago that February would be here today and in his most excited voice he said, “It’s going to be February and that’s when my baby brother will get here!” Since we think due dates are merely suggestions of when a baby could be born, we didn’t bother telling him the due date (we just tell people it’s around Valentine’s Day). We have just told him the baby would come in February. This prompted a conversation to explain there are 28 days in February and his baby brother could show up any day, but not necessarily on the first day.

He was a bit disappointed, but I’m excited he is still excited to become a big brother.

I’m also a bit torn between wishing this baby was here now and waiting until the last moment to welcome Baby Two to our family. Mainly it’s because these last few days of Fuller’s only child experience are coming to an abrupt end someday very soon.

But for now, until the day he really is the big brother, I find myself hugging, cuddling, and tickling him even more. And maybe he understands that soon my lap will soon be occupied by his little brother, because these days Fuller seems to be letting me hug, cuddle, and tickle him even more.
