Growing up

Such a big boy

It’s hard to believe this kid is going to be starting Pre-K this year. It seems like just yesterday he was rolling around in his room, trying to figure out a more efficient way of escape.

Next week we start homeschool with actual focus, schedules, and goals. I’m working to get organized and prepare Fuller for certain changes in our daily life.

Actually, getting Fuller prepared has been one of the things I’ve been a little worried about. See, Fuller really doesn’t seem to “get” school or the idea that other kids go to school at all. Or if he knows, he doesn’t really know what they do there. Sid the Science Kid is pretty much the only television example he’s seen of what kids do in school, but it still seems like he sees it as abstract, not something he could be doing.

This summer several people asked him “What grade are you going to be in next year?” or “Are you going to Kindergarten next year?” And all Fuller did was give them a confused stare. Which made me realize we had to explain to him he would be starting Pre-K and if people asked him what school he goes to, he should reply, “My mommy and daddy teach me at home.”

I decided to be official with a start date, the 17th, since Fuller loves to follow the calendar and know what is happening on each day. It’s helped, and he’s been mentioning starting school at home on Monday. I expect some resistance after a few days, but I’m hoping our use of some Charlotte Mason methods will help keep his interest and excited to learn.

And now, I need to make sure the teacher is actually ready so we can all be excited.
