Well, it finally happened! We’ve been doing school since August and had signed up for several field trips through our homeschool group. But due to rain and problems with rescheduling, we were down to one field trip and crossing our fingers we would actually get to go. It was supposed to be last Friday. Then it was supposed to be Tuesday. And finally we all convened at Mercy Stables this morning for a time of learning about farms, petting a miniature horse, taking a hay ride, and enjoying a picnic lunch together in the barn.

Back in college, I (Damon) was actually quite fast as a cross-country runner. (Basically, if you’re tall, skinny, and stubborn, you’re tailor-made for long-distance running.) Since those days, I’ve gradually gotten older, slower, and fatter (still tall, though). For example, waaaaaaaaaay back in 1992, when running cross country, I was a too-thin 125 lbs., with about 4% body fat. Fast forward 17 years to August of 2009 and I’d risen to 185 lbs. with over 30% of my body composed of fat. Wow! I’d gained 60 pounds in 17 years. At that rate, when I turn 60, I’ll be over 330 lbs!
The reason I mention August, is that when it came time to fit back into that orange-and-blue costume I wear to college football games, I had a little [ahem] trouble keeping the front snaps closed. Bending over to pickup something while seated would cause the Velcro holding my belt closed to pop open. Yikes! So, I began crash dieting.

When we returned from Auburn last week we were met with a broken fridge and quite a messy house. I decided then and there we needed a break.
Fuller and I had been struggling with school, where it was becoming me pulling him along and everyone getting generally frustrated. So we took the week off. I didn’t have restrictions on TV, we went to the playground, the museum, and just relaxed.
And it was great.
What was even better was when we started school again today. Fuller was eager, obedient, and looking forward to what came next.
We were supposed to go on a field trip tomorrow with our homeschool group. Unfortunately it is probably going to rain (AGAIN) so it is being rescheduled. This is field trip number three that has been rescheduled due to rain. I just hope the forecast for Thursday keeps and we can actually make this one up (we haven’t been able to make up the other ones due to travel).
So, besides the field trip messiness, it looks like we are getting back into the groove. And we are happy about it.

Giveaway at the end of the post!
So, Tebow has graduated to the Cheerios stage of food experimentation. He refuses to eat pureed baby food, so we throw mushy and dissolvable food on his tray. Some of it makes it in his mouth, some of it, not so much.
Last weekend, at my Grandma’s, we gave him Cherrios for the first time. He seemed to like them, picking the pieces of cereal up in his tiny fingers and putting them in his mouth. His six teeth manage to break some, others just fall out in the uncoordinated effort of feeding himself.
Most kids end up eating Cherrios at some point in their lives. One of the things Cherrios tries to do in their mission is not only bring food to kids, but to bring books. The Spoonful of Stories program offers free books inside boxes of Cherrios. Right now you can find one of five books distributed by Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing.

On Friday we piled in the car,
Excitement was high for us all.
Knowing we weren’t driving far,
Heading for an Auburn weekend in the Fall.

Our trip took us to campus
We had to pitch a tent
But no, it wasn’t for all of us
Just Damon and Fuller for a short camping stint.
