Mommy Likes Read Aloud
I know I’ve been ranting and raving over Fuller’s reading lately, but I have to say, I’m also enjoying reading to Fuller.
One of our lessons is read aloud, a time in the day where I read aloud to Fuller from a chapter book.
Oh, wait. The video above has nothing to do with this post. I just liked it. It’s comedy. And catchy.
Ahem.
I read aloud to Fuller from a chapter book. We had to make a special trip to McKay’s to pick up chapter books I thought Fuller would enjoy. It was a fun little field trip and we came home with an armful of books and I had such fun visions of our future read aloud time.
Read aloud is more than just a fun story time. It helps Fuller develop his memory and learning to follow a plot from day to day. He gets to hear character development and invest more than five minutes to story. Also, since there are rarely illustrations, his imagination gets a workout.
The first book we read was Stuart Little. It was a fun story for Fuller, but I think he felt it was unresolved at the end.
Now we have moved on to Charlotte’s Web. He has been enjoying the story so far. We were doing only one chapter a day, but recently some chapters have slight cliffhangers, so Fuller begs for at least one more chapter.
Even though it is part of “school,” what I have really been enjoying is the curling up on the couch with Fuller. I like the cuddling and giggling, the voices, the story, and the discussion to follow. And I like how I am reconnecting with Fuller through the art of storytelling.
Ever since Tebow came into our lives, Fuller hasn’t been number one all the time. And often, if he is getting all our attention, it can be quickly pushed aside to focus on Tebow and his immediate needs. I have to admit, I’ve missed the time when it was just Fuller and me. And somehow, when school time turns to read aloud, we get a little bit of that back.
We’ve reached the part in Charlotte’s Web where she starts spinning webs that share a message. I can’t wait to see what he thinks about Wilbur being “Some Pig” because I really think Fuller is some amazing boy.

Oh my that video was hilarious! I hope you don’t mind me posting it on my blog too.
we love chapter books and reading aloud too. we started with the narnia books and jeremiah loves them! it is a special time and also brings back memories of snuggling with my parents on the couch while they read to me.
We tried Narnia but it really didn’t capture his attention. But it is on the list for future reading, for sure!
