Rainbows, gold, and Veggie Tales

Damon sent me out last night to pick something up for his office today. While making the drive I had the sudden inspiration that maybe I should “celebrate” St. Patrick’s Day in some form for my kids. It’s not that I don’t appreciate St. Patrick and his contribution to spreading the word of God, but really it has become watered (or beered?) down in such a way that people don’t even pinch you anymore if you aren’t wearing green.

So, to introduce St. Patrick to the kids I picked up streamers at the store. I got red, orange, yellow, green, and blue. They didn’t have it in indigo or violet. When I got home, the kids were already in bed, so I got to work. And this is the product:

No, it isn’t a pretty video, but the project was a bit too large to fit in a picture.

I put together a pot of gold (a painted pot with gold wrapped candies- Rolos and Hershey Nuggets) and placed it at the rainbow’s end.

pot of gold at the end of our rainbow!

When the boys were up and at em, they were thrilled to step out of their door and see the rainbow greeting them. Fuller knew about leprechauns and gold, so the pot of gold on on the table was also exciting. But really the rainbow just seemed to start their day off right. Fuller asked that I leave it up, which I might do until Saturday.

This afternoon Fuller watched the Veggie Tales explanation of St. Patrick, so I think the day had a decent focus. Next year we might add in some actual Ireland history.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

  1. What a fun way to celebrate! We had a good day, too, though a little less festive. I think I’ll attempt a history lesson next year. :)

  2. Glad your kids are over whatever went around in our very special Dayton week together. I came home coughing and continue to be very sickly. I’m on an antibiotic, a cough suppresent and an antihistamine. Until yesterday I didn’t know if I’d live. Today is a little better and Uncle John called from Washington DC to see how I’m doing. He’s concerned about pneumonia but I think I’m not THAT sick. No temp. Have taken this evening’s round of med’s and need to GET to BED. So good night all. Grandma.

  3. Grandma, I hope you are feeling better! The boys do seem to be better, though I think allergies are getting the best of them. We are happy about the warm days and keeping the windows open, so it is hard to keep away those allergens. Sorry you went home ill!
